The First Step:
Awareness of Upcoming NJ Elections

NJ State Law requires all voters to have completed registration 21 days prior to election day. Knowing when elections are happening is the first step to preparing to vote. 

Midterm Elections 

November 8th, 2022

This year the Midterm Elections will have all of the following up for grabs 

  • All 435 seats in the House of Representatives.

  • Thirty-five seats in the 100-member Senate. This is made up of the standard 34 seats plus a special election to fill the four years remaining in the term of retiring senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma.

  • Thirty-six state governorships, and three US territory governorships.

  • Numerous city mayorships and local officials.

  • One hundred and twenty-nine ballot measures in 36 states including laws on abortion in California, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana, and Vermont.

(Class 3 Senators: Senators elected in 2016) and so are not up for re-election) 

Local  Elections

Local Elections, like Mayor, Board of Education, and Council elections, vary from town to town. However, for NVOT students, the upcoming Norwood Council Election and the election for seat #1 of the Old Tappan School District BoE election

Norwood Council - November 8th, 2022

  • Much like the rest of the local government councils, the Norwood Council is responsible for the budget planning of various elements of Norwood such as new senior citizen homes, Norwood middle school, holiday festivals, etc. 

  • This November, two councilmen seats are up for election 

Old Tappan School District BoE - November 8th, 2022

  • The Old Tappan Board of Education is responsible for overseeing the Old Tappan Elementary, Middle school, and regional High School

    • This oversight covers budgeting, course content, town activities that may impact school environments, teacher appointments, etc. ​ 

  • This November, seats number 4 and number 5 are up for election
